AVIAPLAN / Narud Stokke Wiig Architects and Planners win again!

The result of the international architectural competition for the new terminal complex at Bergen Airport Flesland in Norway was announced on the 19th of June. Narud Stokke Wiig Architects and Planners of Oslo, majority owner of AVIAPLAN, won the project in fierce competition with four other prequalified teams: HOK International of UK, Niels Torp of Norway, Pascall+ Watson of UK and JSK Architekten of Germany. More than one hundred international teams sought prequalification. COWI were air side consultants in the team.
This victory follows the team’s win of the major expansion of Oslo International Airport in February this year in competition with among others Richard Rogers, YRM, Schmidt Hammer Lassen, Niels Torp and Chapman Taylor.
The terminal at Flesland will have an initial capacity of 7 million passengers per year with an ultimate capacity of 15 million. First stage is approximately 60.000 m2 including the existing refurbished terminal.
The new terminal is a centralized concept with a connected pier which is designed for modular growth. The present terminal will be refurbished and added on as a satellite to the new terminal. The concept enables the construction of the new terminal without disturbing the present operations. This was made possible by the removal of a major rock formation to free space for a new landside system and at the same time get rocks to fill up the expansion of the apron area. A station for the new Bergen light rail will be fully integrated in the terminal.
