Our proposal for Hanimaadhoo Airport aims to create a functional and efficient airport while preserving the natural shape and white coastline of the island. We believe our strategy will emphasise and advertise the unspoilt natural qualities of the Maldives.
This is achieved by two primary moves:
• The terminal building is located in the lagoon.
• The runway and taxiway system is located to the far north and east of the island.
This strategy frees up land so that all of the apron areas and other airport functions can be located well inside the existing beach and vegetation line. The additional land is also well suited for the development of hotels, resorts and a retail village in the southern part of the island. Preserving the character of the island is of paramount importance in promoting the Maldives as a sustainable and environmentally conscious destination.
